#22 - Easy Ego State Interventions with Robin Shapiro, LICSW

In her accessible and practical style, Robin Shapiro will teach you how to use ego state therapy to work with a variety of clients and their issues. This can be either a 2 or a 3 day workshop. During the workshop you will learn to distinguish healthy, flexible states from dissociative ones, and to map your own states, from physically-based vagal states to age and role-related states. You’ll learn methods to use embodied ego-state interventions to clear trauma, work with couples, attachment issues, sexual issues with sex-abuse survivors, over-active immune systems and chronic pain, shame, personality disorders, suicidal clients, and dissociative identity disorder. You will learn to track your own states, and you’ll practice many of the interventions. If you do EMDR, you’ll learn when it’s more useful to use EMDR, when to use ego state work, and when and how to use them both. The 3-day format includes ample time for practice, for questions, and for clinical demonstrations. And despite the seriousness of the subject, expect to enjoy the process.

This lively and informative workshop will summarize a basic introduction to Internal Family Systems (IFS) theory and demonstrate practical IFS informed clinical interventions into the eight phases of EMDR.

#20 - Emotions and Christians- Friends or Foes? with Dr. Cary Corley

Dr. Corley and his family packed up and moved to the Kansas City area in 2013 when Cary took a job as a counselor at Peace Partnership in Lee's Summit. Cary and Lynsey met at the University of Alabama where he was studying psychology and she was studying finance. They've been married since 2005 and have three wonderful kids. Both Cary and Lynsey love hanging out with friends and watching movies with family.Cary has a passion for helping individuals and families to find healing through counseling, and his Christian faith is a key component of both his personal and professional life. He is an experienced Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor (LPC-S) in Missouri and Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) in Kansas. His focus is primarily in marriage counseling, adolescent therapy, and family therapy. His motto is "simplify", and he tries to live this out in both his professional and personal life. He has a doctorate of counseling from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and a masters degree in biblical counseling from Dallas Theological Seminary. He earned his bachelors degree in psychology from the University of Alabama and holds a certificate as a National Board Certified Counselor. He is trained in EMDR and the Gottman Method.

In this engaging and informative two day Live Webinar training by Dr. Arielle Schwartz, you will learn a biopsychosocial model of care which takes into account objective physical and biological factors of pain and illness as well as factors that are psychological or psychogenic in origin. Within this training, you will develop an understanding of the polyvagal theory as related to trauma recovery. A biopsychosocial approach assists clients to increase their sense of control, self-efficacy, and self-regulation regarding the intensity and duration of disturbing physical symptoms.

TRAINING OBJECTIVES

You will learn tools to address client experiences related to medical mismanagement, invasive medical procedures, or the lack of control that commonly arises with chronic pain and illness. Treating somatic disorders and illness can be challenging; especially when the etymology lies in complex, developmental trauma. Therefore, you will be guided to assess for dissociation, lack of affect tolerance, or secondary gains that may block successful resolution of traumatic events.

This is an intermediate program for all mental health professionals

Recognize that chronic pain involves disturbing somatic components combined with emotional responses and cognitive interpretations.

Recount the distinction between stress, chronic stress, and unresolved PTSD in the different ways that they impact health.

Describe the polyvagal theory as related to trauma recovery

Learn how to assess for dissociation and identify client’s parts or ego states as related to pain and illness

Learn resource development installation to help clients develop greater control over pain and illness symptoms

Recognize that a high level of adverse childhood experiences contributes to greater health risks in adulthood.

Discuss how research has shown the relationship between cortisol levels and the immune system in clients with chronic PTSD.

Discuss how somatic symptoms including illnesses and chronic pain can be used as potential targets in EMDR Therapy.

Recall that when targeting a body sensation, you can use a floatback/affect bridge or not use a floatback/affect bridge in the assessment phase for chronic pain

Apply at least two types of self-care techniques to help clients with chronic pain learn to regulate and manage their pain.

Sheila Russell LISW, is an experienced therapist and speaker who has worked in residential treatment for children’s mental health, family services for those involved with state social services, supervision in residential substance abuse treatment for women and their children as well as an Adjunct Instructor for Grand View University’s Addiction Psychology Course. Ms. Russell launched her private practice, Front Line Therapy in West Des Moines, IA in 2019 joining EMDR & Beyond in West Des Moines Iowa. She is a Certified EMDR Therapist and EMDRIA Approved Consultant with expertise in EMDR and trauma treatment of simple and complex PTSD focusing specifically on First Responders, Military Personnel, Domestic Violence, and Gambling and Substance Abuse Disorders, completing specialty training in these presenting issues.

Today's episode will be a little different, as it is a "Healed Confessional" with Mom, Grandma, podcaster author and satanic ritual abuse survivor Lisa Meister. Lisa's story of healing is inspirational, but it may be difficult to listen to for individuals who have experienced childhood abuse themselves. #16 - Dealing with Avoidance in EMDR Therapy With Crystal Whitlow, LCSW

Crystal Whitlow, LCSW, is a Certified EMDR Therapist, Approved EMDR Consultant, and EMDR trainer. She maintains a private practice specializing in Complex PTSD since 2008 in South Bend, Indiana. In addition, Crystal consults and teaches the EMDR Therapy training and advanced EMDR workshops throughout the midwest and beyond.

This workshop will explore client and clinician avoidance in EMDR therapy. Targeting blocking beliefs and defenses with EMDR will be taught, using Jim Knipe’s EMDR Toolbox procedures. Clinician avoidance will be addressed through practice sessions with partners in the training to deepen the learning of procedures to use with clients.

Workshop will begin with focus on importance of attunement and therapeutic relationship. Affect strengthening exercises and healthy containment skills will be taught. Blocking beliefs will be explored using Jim Knipe’s Blocking Beliefs Questionnaire. Detailed descriptions of common defenses used by clients will be discussed. Specific skills and exercises will be taught to help the clinician target blocking beliefs and defenses in their clinical sessions.

Practice sessions (live and virtual) will be in pairs as clinicians work on their own avoidance, blocks, and defenses. Facilitator will assist in these sessions to deepen practical application of new skills being taught..

#15 - Defeating Despair- A Guide to Psychotherapy in Hard Times - Robin Shapiro, LICSW

Robin Shapiro, LICSW is known for her clear, accessible and practical style in writing, teaching and clinical consultation. She edited and contributed to EMDR Solutions: Pathways to Healing (Norton, 2005) a and EMDR Solutions II: Depression, Eating Disorders, Performance & More (2009) and wrote Trauma Treatment Workbook (2010) and Easy Ego State Interventions (2016). She loves her work: writing, presenting, and practicing psychotherapy for 38 years.

Challenging times can be traumatizing, and can stir up old and chronic traumatic states. This webinar covers the identification and treatment of traumatic responses to current cultural distresses. We'll start with the COVID-19 pandemic, identifying the losses and anxieties that have come up for nearly anyone, and how to name them, be present with them, and move them through with EMDR and other techniques.

Hope Payson, LCSW has been working with individuals struggling with addiction for 30 years in a variety of settings. She shared her vast knowledge and wisdom related to the the multiple causes and the treatment of addiction. Hope also shared information about a documentary she produced entitled "Uprooting Addiction" that includes the inspirational journeys of several individuals recovering from addiction.
